Ponteland 2nd XV 53 - 12 Whitley Bay Rockcliff 2nd XV
League & No. 4 Cup Double Header
Ponteland 2nd XV took to the field on Saturday for a double header in both the league and No. 4 Cup, fully aware that a tough, physical battle lay ahead against a well-drilled Whitley Bay Rockcliff side. From the outset, it was clear that whichever fifteen players were on the field, this was a group committed to playing for one another — working hard in both attack and defence and offering constant support across the park.

The early exchanges were closely contested. Ponteland enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first half but, despite their territorial advantage, the team wasn’t quite firing on all cylinders. Handling errors and missed opportunities meant that the scoreboard didn’t fully reflect the dominance in set pieces, where Ponteland’s scrum was once again a key weapon. The pack applied relentless pressure, winning clean ball and stealing several of Rockcliff’s lineouts to keep the visitors on the back foot.
The second half told a very different story. After regrouping at the break, Ponteland hit their stride — the forwards laid a solid platform with secure ball and powerful carries, while the backs found their rhythm with sharp, direct running and excellent support lines. The result was an explosive forty minutes of rugby that saw seven tries scored, each built on teamwork, composure, and commitment to play expansive rugby.
It was a great all-round team performance, with every player contributing to the momentum shift that defined the match. Elusive running, crisp passing, and relentless support ensured that Ponteland finished the game in emphatic fashion.
Special mention must go to Harry and Jay, who answered Walton’s late call on Saturday morning to step in after a couple of cry-offs. Their efforts epitomised the spirit of the team — ready to stand up and be counted when needed most.
As the final whistle blew, Ponteland emerged with a convincing 53–12 victory — a result that reflected not just the skill on show, but the collective heart and unity within the squad. Both in the league and the cup, this was a statement performance from a side growing stronger every week.
