Blyth 2nds 12 Ponteland 2nds 38 Aln Lge game

After last weeks 3s scoring 10 tries the tries continued to flow at Blyth on sat . A bright but breezy afternoon, fabulous playing conditions resulted in a deserved victory for the 2s . Pont had a few changes with unavailability Young Colt Robbie Crowe making his senior debut at full back and despite looking a bit apprehensive among strangers ,expecting a couple of other colts to be down, once he got on the pitch any nerves he had, soon evaporated in an assured and polished display with a deserved try to boot .
Pont started hard out of the blocks and were 5-0 up after 2mins a lineout catch and drive with Rob Earnshaw (back at no8 having by far his best game this season so far ) dotting down . This was a setback to Blyth who`s strength was evidently in the forward`s and stunned them for the first quarter . The lineout prowess of Rob Charlton and supporting jumper Jordan Varah produced a steady stream of possession for Ponteland and with Elliott Mew hitting his targets the back line got the ball they desired to play some lovely running rugby. Scrums were messy a lot breaking up but well contested . The fitter and quicker Pont players always looked dangerous with ball in hand with more supporting runners whilst the blyth backs were starved of service . A few chances were wasted by pont a chip and chase with a four on two and a loose looping pass with the winger with a simple run in were two that should have been taken, but two more tries for pont in the first half a storming 50m run by Peter Curry (that well known winger) well supported by Robbie Crowe ,a quick pass putting James Shiels through next to the posts ,con slotted by Will McGawley and a lovely flowing move finished off by Robbie C con to W McG entertained the small but perfectly formed supporters whilst a well deserved try for the blyth s half beating four men on his way to the corner HT 19-5 .
The second half was played in a similar vein with blyth driving their bigger forwards onwards and Pont using their quicker guys to good effect. A fourth try for pont with Tom Watson (making his comeback after being crippled playing football last year) finishing off a chance with a great 40 metre run in beating 3 defenders with his searing pace on the outside . Olly Dykes charging through like a rampant rhino for his usual try after some great defence on our own line with a brave fall by Robbie C rowe securing possession about 1 ft from our try line. Mr Twinkletoes himself capt Chris Searle weaving , stepping and evading about 6 players to score under the posts 2 conversions by WMcG with Blyth getting a reply through their forward driving despite some valiant defending by the Pont defence .
This game was hard fought in the forwards particularly, but the breakdown was a total mess with players not rolling away and entering at all angles with the ref not really getting to grips with it eventually frustrations grew and the game ended a couple of minutes early after a bit of handbags.
A good win for Pont, 5 points towards the lge tally and more signs that the squad is starting to take shape with plus points from Jonny Murphy coming through un scathed ,Sean Bettison another returnee getting more match time Simon Grant (real live action man) a full game ,James Shiels an assured game in the centres and Robbie Crowe playing so positively despite his tender years Hopefully we can get other colts down, when the opportunity arises as the four who have played this year , are certainly capable of playing at least at this level.
Altogether a satisfactory day full of plusses with a home fixture v Alnwick 3rds ko 2-15 next week
